For the second year in a row the outcome was a tie, with Gokul Venkatachalam and Vanya Shivashankar ending up as co-winners once the Bee's dictionary was emptied. Vanya was the first sibling of a previous winner to win; her sister Kavya won in Vanya Shivashankar from Olathe, Kansas in her fifth appearance at the Bee and Gokul Venkatachalam from Chesterfield, Missouri who finished third the prior year won the bee, the thirteenth of the past seventeen bees to have an Indian-American champion. When only two contestants are left and one of the two misspells a word, the other student must correctly spell two words to win. Ten of the 17 students in the spelling bee had to step down from the stage after missing one word each in the first round and another five had to step down in the second round, leaving only Nguyen and Waldrup.

Anna Lankford, elementary and middle school curriculum director for the Wilkes schools, said it was unusual for that many students to misspell their first words. The entire spelling bee only lasted 29 minutes, which was shorter than usual.

Waldrup is the son of John and Sabrina Waldrup of Ronda. Nguyen said in an interview that he prepared by studying lists of words from a national spelling bee website suggested by his teacher for two to three hours every day for two weeks.
