After the death of his parents at a very young age, Adolphus — called Gilly — was taken under the wing of Lord Lionel, his uncle, and placed under constant care.

Left alone with his meddlesome uncle, Gilly longs for a world with less restrictions and more adventure. Now in his mid-twenties, Gilly simply longs to be free.

After his cousin Matthew finds himself in a very precarious situation in regard to the attentions of a young lady, Gilly decides his life could use a little more autonomy — and sets about dealing with a man who is trying to blackmail his family and their good name. From the beginning, I felt for the duke and could feel my own annoyance at the bevy of people constantly bombarding him with questions — all seemingly to do with ensuring his own happiness and comfort.

I also wished they could begin to understand that Gilly had, before their own eyes, grown into a man — and was a man capable of making his own decisions. Dash of Nowhere In Particular. What fell flat for me was my lack of emotional connection to anyone other than Gilly. The novel lacked an impetus for me to keep reading, as I knew that surely nothing tragic would befall the characters. We do meet Lady Harriet, the young woman to whom Gilly awkwardly proposes marriage, but I wanted to see much more of a dynamic between them.

I really liked your insights on this one. I think we both should not have started out with Grand Sophy!! It truly set the bar for me!! Like Like. I thought it was going to be more of a romance too, but I was pleased with what it turned out to be. I have Arabella sitting on my shelf so I might give that a go in the new year.

Hi Meg, it is amazing to think that a talented author like Heyer could push out a flat note. Even at her dimest, I imagine she is better than most, but understand your disappointment after the sparkling Grand Sophie.

Great to know that you have over 50 of her novels to choose from. Hope the next one is better. Thanks for the great review. PS — Meg, my 30 y. She has read several books based on your reviews. She likes Austen movies and sequels, but has not completed a novel yet. There is still hope, and in the meantime, your blog. Menu Skip to content Home about meg books contact recipes. Search for:. The Foundling

August 13, by Claire The Captive Reader. What fun this was! It is truly an old-style romance, by which I mean an adventure tale with sinister villains, daring kidnappings, a beautiful damsel, and the appropriate comic relief. Except that Gilly, for all his titles, is hardly the dashing hero such circumstances usually require. Gilly, the reader is assured, shall remain as kind and stable as ever, only more confident of his own abilities and far more independent. Indeed, part of the fun with any Heyer novel is comparing it to those you have previously read, recognizing a certain plot twist from one, a secondary character with a doppelganger in another. Most obviously, The Foundling is very similar in plot to its inferior successor Charity Girl originally published in
