Christopher van Wyk: farewell to a South African literary icon

People could be locked away almost permanently without access to law-courts to prove their innocence. Prisoners who were regarded as politically dangerous often met with a savage death while in detention. The excuses given were usually the same: suicide or a silly accident. Opponents of the regime knew that these excuses were merely lies.

N ot long after the death of Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, South Africa has lost another literary icon. Born in in Riverlea, the coloured township adjacent to Soweto, in the west of Johannesburg, Van Wyk shot to fame through his widely anthologised poem In Detention , which satirised the strange reasons given by the apartheid establishment for the deaths of political prisoners in John Vorster Square, the notorious security police headquarters in Johannesburg. My first conversation with Chris was in John Vorster Square at the launch of a biography of Ahmed Timol, the young teacher who, according to the security police, committed suicide by jumping from the 10th floor of the high-rise building. The book launch was held at John Vorster Square because Charles Nqakula, minister of police at the time in a newly-democratic South Africa , wanted new police recruits to understand the brutality of the past and develop a new culture of peace and democracy.

Where exactly was this poem written, where could it have been written? Canada or the United States? It happens that this "In Detention" was written in apartheid-era South Africa. Contemporary governments along with most modernized publics officially abhor "torture," forbid its practice while sanctioning or excusing torture under other names , and will go to telling lengths, when torture's practice and results leak into public view, to deny its use. That's why Chris van Wyk's poem still feels immediate - especially its rendering of the modern state's habitual press conference patter, a patter characterized by the effort to keep its actual loopiness from notice, and whose aim is to mesmerize us away from our felt-sense and intelligence.

He was strongly influenced by political events particularly the Soweto uprising of , and this is reflected in his writing. Content The title immediately places the poem in apartheid South Africa, and comments indirectly on the number of deaths in detention of political activists during these years at least 67 people died in detention. During the apartheid era, laws were passed which allowed the security police to detain people indefinitely without having to give any reason. Many people were tortured, some committed suicide, and some like Steve Biko died at the hands of their interrogators those who were questioning them.
