There is something to be said for going back to basics. Cirque du Soleil has been getting bigger, flashier and flabbier too in some theatrically over-poised, acrobatically underwhelming shows of late. The show delivers and then exceeds the standards it sets for itself with two hours of edge-of-the-seat entertainment that had the audience, on several occasions, audibly gasping. Acrobats dressed in traditional smock-frocks perform jumps on hand-held sheets and balance on poles for this back-to-basics starter, which is no less spectacular for its simple tools and tricks.

That is if I could…. From the on-set of the minute spectacle of impeccable, thrilling world-class acrobatics, right until we got home, the whole experience still had us mesmerized as we recounted our favourite segments to each other. Cirque du Soleil needs no introduction. Today, more than million people have seen a Cirque act. As recently as , there would be 18 different Cirque du Soleil productions being staged around the globe concurrently.
These and more spelling-binding, gravity-defying acts which left the audience dumbfounded and shrieking in wonder. Needless to say, rapturous applause thundered, act after act. Just when you think classic circus acts are outdated, KOOZA pushes boundaries up many notches by challenging conventions, giving audiences unforgettable circus experiences which only Cirque du Soleil can deliver.
KOOZA explores human connection in the world of duality — good and bad. The tone of the show is light, fun. It chronicles the journey of the characters as they discover the concepts of identity, recognition, fear and power. The Innocent is brought through a journey which he encounters hilarious characters such as the King, the Heimloss, the Obnoxious and the affable Bad Dog. These encounters accompany him in the discovery of identity, recognition and power: an analogy perhaps of what life entails for each of us in our respective journey of discovery.
The Innocent ends his journey with glee, happiness and a renewed sense of child-like awe…very much like the audience who left the Big Top yesterday night.
Hearing the music played and sung LIVE and echoed through the iconic Big Top was a magical experience for the entire audience. It is set to dazzle, mesmerize and stretch the imagination of adults and kids alike in the rare, childlike wonder, giving everyone whos enters the Grand Chapiteau a truly unforgettable experience that is unlike any other. The prolonged standing-ovation on opening night of KOOZA is strong testament to this fantastic production.
Is it suitable for children? It is perfect for children and the child in each of us! For younger children perhaps ages 7 and below , parents may need to inform them that these acts are executed by professionals, under strict supervision and safety measures, they are not to be replicated at home.
Comfy booster seats are provided by the venue for younger children. Just ask the friendly ushers. Children under 2 years of age may be admitted free of charge provided they do not occupy a seat they must be seated on the lap of a parent or guardian.
Children aged 2 years and above must purchase a ticket for admission. All children below 12 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is a general sense of mystique but not foreboding or dark.
What is the duration of the show? The entire show lasts over about 2. It started slightly past 8pm and ended at Are there toilets around? There are rows of clean toilets outside the main tent. Given that the interval is minute long, you can even take a brisk walk back to MBS to use the washrooms there and return in good time. What else do I need to note?
This includes the waiting area for the washrooms. So if the weather seem unfavorable, it would be good to bring umbrellas along. The box office opens at 6. You need to climb some steps to reach your seats in the Big Top. Jeans, long pants recommended. It was indeed an amazing show. My favourite bits were the Wheels of Death and the Contortionists.

Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA, Now in Singapore!
Montreal's Cirque du Soleil is back in HK with their jaw-dropping feats. Liana Cafolla had a chance to go backstage in the lead-up to the show's opening. Backstage, days before Kooza opens in Hong Kong, the atmosphere is one of buzzing activity and barely-suppressed excitement. Underlying the hustle and bustle is an unmistakable sense of focus. The wardrobe girl diligently brushes out the fake dogs' coats. The performing artistes are warming up off stage before going into a rehearsal.

Reflecting Cirque du Soleil's return to more traditional circus arts with clowning and acrobatics, Marie-Chantale Vaillancourt costume designer chose a color palette more in line with traditional circus and burlesque : red, white, and gold. The other main character, the Trickster, is impeccably dressed, with the same colored stripes as the Innocent, yet his are vertical. In fact, the stripes are aligned to such a degree that the lines run directly in line from headpiece to shoe. Much detail was put into piecing the wool-lycra blend pieces together to show the Trickster's mischievous and all-powerful character.

The event was graced by many media personalities and Sophie was so envious when we told her we saw the folks from The Smart Local. The show was at 8pm and we arrived at the trademark blue-and-yellow big top, right next to the Marina Bay Sands, half an hour in advance. Since videography and photography are not allowed during the performance, we snapped some photos outside the Big Top and at the M1 booth where we did a GIF video and received a print out of it which doubles up as a coaster.
